This week, I decided to find out what it takes to become a CC. Only problem is that I commute and therefore don’t have a CC and not really sure what one actually does. I decided to ask a CC at my friend’s dorm (Neff) since I’m there most of the time. First I wanted to know what the difference between a CC and a RA. A CC is in charge of a floor, while an RA is in charge of the entire building. The CC is usually a junior or a senior. Someone who is old enough to be able to help you and young enough for you to feel comfortable with and can relate to. They keep order and make sure that everyone is following the rules. They help students with issues and direct them to someone who can help them.
Not just any one can be a CC. You have to live on campus for at least one semester and keep a 2.7 GPA. There’s an application process that goes along with it. You are encouraged to complete it by or before January.
There are a few perks with this job. It’s not all about responsibility and hard work. You get your own room (which is pretty nice). You get to live and eat on campus for free (who doesn’t like free food?).
But it’s not just about the perks of this job. You have to be willing and able to help other first and second year students. You have to patient and helpful to the best of your abilities. You need to be able to help people with academic and personal lives. If someone on your floor needs help with homework, you have to be able to help them with it or at least be able to help them locate a resource on campus that can help them. Someone is feeling homesick. You have to be able to sit down and talk with them. Help them come up with ways to communicate with people back at home. Suggest writing a letter, calling, setting up a web cam and talking to loved ones back home. Etc.
Now I don’t live on campus because I live one town over and want to save money. If I were in a situation where I had to live on campus, then I would consider applying to become a CC. But since I don’t need to live here I probably won’t. I’m not saying that there’s anything wrong with being a CC, I think it’s a great thing. It’s just not worthwhile for me. I wouldn’t be a good applicant because I work 30+ hours at my job and I like to spend my weekends out with my friends. I feel as though my availability sucks and I wouldn’t be able to help anyone out. Now maybe in2-3 years things may be different and I may want to apply. But I definitely recommend applying to anyone who lives on campus and likes helping others.
